We've just released our newest feature, customizable domains. This will then mean you can map, using your own DNS (Domain Name Server), personalizing to your companies own domain.
  e.g. https://svn.mydomain.com maps to https://USERNAME-svn.cvsdude.com

Using our custom URL scheme will have other benefits also. Our hosted Trac product will now use mod_python, which will dramatically speed up Trac page load time by 10x ! The new scheme is also a lot easier for us to manage here on the backend, meaning we can give you an even better service !

We do charge a small fee for access to this feature, please see our optional products page.

We're pleased to announce our new Advanced Mode for editing Module (ACL) Permissions. When the going gets tough, programmers grab their favorite text editor so our advanced Permissions editor lets you simply write — or paste from an editor or custom script — your new ACL file with no overhead.

We have also updated the signup page and added several minor features, some in the UI and some "under the hood".

Mar 2007: Advanced cluster backend (BETA) released

After over a year indevelopment, our clustered hosting solution is ready for you to try. This new backend system gives you advanced reliability, availability, security and data redundancy. With multiple storage nodes for your data, your valuable information will be mirrored across each node, so in the event a node failure there will be no data loss and no interruption to service. Our storage nodes are hosted on a private sub-net (not routable via the Internet), so your data is even safer from potential hackers. Similar technology is used for our web server nodes, we have multiple front end nodes serving up you data, speeding up our service by spreading load across each node and providing redundancy incase of node failure.

Mar 2007: New website live

At last we release our new website. The new site represents a major change for us with both the administration post-login interface revamped and the entire rest of the site given a major make over. We hope you enjoy using it as much as we enjoyed developing it. Our site is a constant work-in-progress, with new features added constantly, generally at the request of our customers.

Enjoy !

Sarah will be actively developing our service as well as answering your support queries.

Jun 2006: Trac: Trac.ini web admin interface

This month we have installed 2 custom Trac plugins for you. One will allow you to edit your Trac.ini file via your Trac page, and the other will allow you to upload image files for your main Trac header image and also upload CSS template file so you can modify the look and feel of your Trac page(s). Both of these new plugins will enable you to fully manage the configuration of your Trac pages without the need to contact us and ask our Admins to make such changes manually, as was the case in the past. The upload plugin was written here by us at CVSDude.

May 2006: Trac: Localize to your timezone

CVSDude has responded your concerns again. This time relating to our hosted Trac product. Many of our CVSDude Trac users would be aware that Trac only supports one timezone, that of the server its running on. This is a problem given our users are spread all over the globe in all manner of timezones. We have since commissioned a patch for Trac that allows the user to configure their timezone, enabling Trac to display tickets, timeline, wiki, browse source, etc in the timezone of the user.

We will shortly be releasing this patch back to the Trac community.

Mar 2006: Subversion: create group based ACLs

Subversion users can now create group based ACLs * (Access Control Lists). Using our Group administration page and our ACL page, you can now create ACIs (Access Control Instructions) based on groups of users. This gives you way more flexibility when managing your team. In addition to this you can also assign commit alert notifications based on groups, and mailing lists based on groups.

* ACLs (Access Control Lists), allow you to restrict access to your modules (projects) to select members of your project team. Access can be restricted in terms of (read-only/read+write/deny) at a directory level granularity.

Feb 2006: Trac: WebAdmin plugin now available

Due to customer demand we have put in place a plugin for Trac, WebAdmin. This module will allow Trac users to administer some basic functionality of Trac, which previously could only be done by CVSDude sys-admins. Please see here for more info on WebAdmin.

Jan 2006: SourceSecure merged into CVSDude

On 23rd January, 2006 SourceSecure was merged into CVSDude system. SourceSecure customers did not experience any downtime in the transition. All SourceSecure customers were placed on the same plans they were on at SourceSecure and will have the option of switching to any of the other CVSDude plans once their current contract period is over. The only change current customers will have to make to access repositories and the online interface is to use the following URLs in place of the SourceSecure URLs. For Subversion, use svn1.cvsdude.com and for CVS, use cvs1.cvsdude.com. To log in to the online interface, SourceSecure customers will be able to use their existing SourceSecure username and passwords to log in at http://www.cvsdude.com.

For more information on this move, please see this information page.

Jan 2006: Commit alert emails now customisable

As requested by our customers, we have given the ability to modify your CVS and SVN commit alert emails. These are sent out to specified email addresses upon a commit operation, this now allows for greater flexability to notify you and your team mebers of all changes happening with your code.

Jan 2006: New improved backend infrastructure

Due to our customer subscriber-ship growing significantly over 2005, it became apparent to us that our some of our backend systems, including our authentication system needed improving. We have responded to our customers comments, and late last year (Nov 2005) we pushed through some key changes to our software infrastructure to improve performance and reliability. The changes include a centralised, multi-slave replicated LDAP authentication system and reworking of many of our automated procedures. Implementing LDAP on all our customer server has seen vast improvements in performance and reliability, we are very happy with the way it has worked out as it also allows us to maintain and manage our systems much better and thus bringing you an even better service.

Sep 2005: Serving over 10,000+ customers

This month our user base has swelled to over 10,000 unique accounts. This is a major milestone for us and we are happy to be able to assist so many people with our subversion hosting and cvs hosting services. This has also meant that we have had to purchase our 3rd primary server, a dual Opteron 244, with 2Gb RAM, running RAID-5 on the storage devices. Our scalable architecture means we can grown limitlessly.

CVSDude has steadily been introducing new features for our customers along the way. Everything from Subversion hosting to Trac (an excellent project management suite), to Bugzilla (a great open source bug tracking solution), to Mailing Lists. You will be provided with everything you need to get take your own personal backup on your own systems, with all the data required. Over the past 4 months we have seen significant increase in popularity and use of our service and we have responded with major system architecture changes to implement a custom built server farm. This will mean a big increase in speed and performance of our service and allow us to add new servers to our farm as needed, meaning we can maintain great response time to your repositories and project management applications.

Feb 2005: Subversion: Trac now available

Many of our customers have requested we install a wiki, or some kind of project management suite. Many have also requested that we install Trac, and we have responded. Trac is now available to our commercial customers. This can be accessed via "manage" under the "account" page after you login to our website. Note: this is only available to customers on the "project team" account or above.

Jan 2005: Subversion: Create either fsfs or bdb (Berkeley DB) backend

Subversion users now have the option to create their database backend in either fsfs (File System) or bdb (Berkeley DB) formats. Note: you must have upgraded to our "more developer" plan or above to use this feature.

Nov 2004: Bugzilla now available

Many of our customers have requested that we make available Bugzilla, the popular open source bug tracker, www.bugzilla.org. Well, now we are happy to announce that we have done so. You will get your own private Bugzilla installation that only you and your team can access and use as much as you like. This is only available on our upgrade plans of "more developer" or above.

Oct 2004: Alert Notifications now include diffs

Alert Notifications now include diffs for each file that has changed. This will allow you and your team members to quickly and easily see what exactly has changed in your repository, with diffs for each changed file attached to your alert email. You will need an upgraded account on the "developer" plan or above for this feature. We have also included the "author" field in our CVS Alert notifications allowing you to tell who made the change.

Oct 2004: Subversion: New Anonymous access

Subversion users now have the ability to set anonymous access on their repositories. So if you have code that you would like to be "world readable", then this is now possible. This feature is most commonly used in open source projects. Of course you can lock down your repository with relevant ACLs (Access Control Lists) so only your development team has write access.

Sep 2004: Subversion: New HTTP/S protocol selector

With our Subversion service, you now have the ability to switch on or off access to the http and https protocol. This means that if you feel that http is to insecure and wish to mandate that all your team members must use https, you can. And if a team member accidently types in http, they will be rejected. It is up to you how to delegate for each of your members. You must have an upgraded account on the "more developer" plan or above to access this feature.

Aug 2004: Subversion: WebSVN now available

This month we have again extended our Subversion service to include WebSVN. WebSVN is a web based read only interface to your Subversion repository, much like Viewcvs is a web interface to CVS repositories. WebSVN is only available on our "More Developer" and above plans. Click here to check out our SVN plans.

Aug 2004: Subversion: multiple repositories now enabled

Our Subversion service now allows for multiple repositories under the one account. This will enable users to maintain totally separate modules with independent version numbering, etc. We make use of the SVNParentPath apache configuration directive for Subversion to enable this feature. The good thing here is that our notification feature and ACL feature are all completely integrated.

July 2004: CVSDude celebrates 2nd birthday !

We have been offering our highly regarded service now for 2 years. From humble beginnings as the first on-line "private" CVS hosting provider, we are excited about the position we are in now. We look forward to a bright future and always enjoy the communication with our customers.

June 2004: Subversion service released !

You have the option to sign up for a either CVS or Subversion. Subversion is a new improved version control suite that is similar to CVS but with many enhancements. One major feature Subversion has over CVS is directory level ACLs (Access Control Lists) that allow you to assign specific permissions to your development team members to each directory in your repository. Sign up for your account now !

April 2004: Important: CVS server upgrade

CVSDude will be upgrading our server to cvs-1.12.7 on Thursday, 29th April, 06:00am UTC/GMT Time. The upgrade is a result of a security alert for older versions of CVS. See this article, http://www.securityfocus.com/bid/10138/info. cvs-1.12.7 includes a number of changes that might cause problems with your existing CVS clients. We recommend that if you have problems with CVS after the specified date, please upgrade your CVS clients to their latest versions.

April 2004: Viewcvs now available

For those of our users that who have their own CVSROOT, we now offer Viewcvs. Viewcvs is a popular and excellent tool for viewing your CVS Repository. March 2004: Message Tracker now has email alerts

You can now configure your message tracker to notify you and your team members whenever someone changes or enters a message. You must make sure that each team member has specified an email address on their "account" page and turned on "Email Alerts" on the "project manage" page in order to benefit from this feature.

March 2004: CVSDude introduces Integrated Noticication system

Essentially our Integration notification system enables developers to specify a URL/script (that you write) which will be called by our servers whenever a CVS "commit" operation occurs (a change). This give you and your team the freedom to integrate your build system more closley with your development procedure by allowing you to create your own update "script". Lets say for example this "script" does a number of things whenever a change occurs in your source code. First it needs to notify your team members, then copy certian files to a different location, set file permissions and then compile the latest binary. Integrated notifications will allow you to automatically call this "script" whenever a change occurs.

Jan 2004: NOTICE TO ECLIPSE USERS !

If you are having troubles using eclipse with CVSDude. This is due to a change in the CVS code from versions 1.11.6 to 1.11.7 which displays the module listing for a CVSROOT. You can easily get around this problem by downloading the latest Stream Stable build from the eclipse.org web site or here.

Jan 2004: Notification system amended.

Our Alert Notification System now gives authorized account the ability to add new email addresses to the list of contacts (emails that are sent messages whenever someone performs a "commit" on a specified module"). Thanks to CVSDude user Rob Moore, for suggesting this feature.

Jan 2004: Bug Tracking system extended.

Our Bug Tracking system now acts like a "New Mail" type system where users are notified of new messages on their "accounts" page. This makes a lot of difference as users will no longer have to click right through the system hunting for any new messages. A summary of "Total" and "New" messages is also included on the "Project Manage" page.

You will find the "New Messages" alert at the top of your screen in you "account" page right after logging into our site.

Jan 2004: CVSDude Internet connection now 100Mb !

This is big news for us and our users. We are now running from a fast 100Mb connection on the West coast of Nth America meaning your communication with our servers is much, much faster than before and those commits and checkouts will fly by ! We hope you enjoy our new improved service and thank you for supporting us.

Dec 2003: Bug Tracking system extended.

We have extended the Bug Tracker to include "Message Tracking". This allows you and your team members to pass messages to each other regarding generic items that might wish to discuss with your projects.

Nov 2003: Bug Tracking system extended.

Our own Bug tracking system has been extended to include extra project management items. These include a "To-do" list and "Features" list. Now you can communicate things "to-do" and suggested "features" to your other team members while differentiating from your existing "bug" reports.

Nov 2003: Now supporting public key SSH Authentication.

CVSDude now has support for CVS authentication via SSH public keys. We have a facility for members to upload their public SSH key and use this more secure way of communication of your source code. All authorized accounts (sub accounts) have access to this same facility. This offer is only available to selected upgrade plans.

Nov 2003: Automated Raw CVS repository download.

As with the manual Raw CVS repository download feature. We also offer you the option to automate this procedure. Giving you an interface you can call from a nightly/weekly job on your end. This allows you to automate your own personal backup procedure so there is never a change you'll be without regular backups of your code. This offer is only available to members on our "Project Team" account.

Oct 2003: Download Raw CVS Repository.

CVSDude now offers you the option to download the Raw CVS repository for your modules. This means you can take your own off site backups and even continue on with your source module if you decide to run your own CVS server elsewhere. This offer is only available to members on our "Project Team" account.

Sept 2003: New Look web site released.

Our debut web site has taken us a long way and served its purpose very well, but like all things it was time for a change. We have maintained our simplistic look and feel while taking care of the rough edges. We hope you like it as much as we do.

Sept 2003: CVSDude hosting SJSU (San Jose State University) software projects.

CVSDude is happy to announce the hosting of software projects for San Jose State University. We are proud to be part of SJSU's Enterprise Software Technologies Program and wish all students involved good luck on their projects. We are sure they will enjoy the benefits of version control.

August 2003: Email update notifications feature

We now offer Email notifications via the CVSROOT/loginfo file. Whenever you check in new versions of your software, an automatic notification (configured by you) can be sent out to an email list of your choice. This is very good for communication amongst your team members as it saves the hassle of composing the update email yourself and your team members will receive instant notification of any software changes.

July 2003: CVSDude celebrates 1st Birthday !!

Since our operation began in July 2002, we have been servicing the CVS needs of developers out there and now proudly host well over 1,000 accounts and over 500 software projects with an average of 60 projects updated daily. As did we, you have all seen the need for straight up CVS server access, we are happy to meet your needs and happy that many of your projects have become a success. We also thank the many generous people out there who have made donations to help the service keep going. We have used this money to pay for new equipment (HDD's, servers, switches, UPS, etc) and faster Internet access. To all of you CVSDuders, we wish you good luck with your projects. If you would like to leave us any comments, please email us here.
